Day 12: rest day Wigtown

I was just dozing off last night when I heard the familiar sound of Poppy wretching. I got up to find three piles of dark brown S**T coloured puke and quickly opened the door to let her continue outside. Then the job of cleaning up and sorting her out before I could get myself back in bed. Fancy her doing this on a night when I was on my own and didn’t have my support team with me! I’m sure that they’re very glad that they had left.

Then I couldn’t get back to sleep. My mind wandered and I thought about Angela, about being alone in my tiny bed and I became sad and tearful again. I wonder if it’s because I was on my own in Priscilla tonight without the distraction of company.

I finally got to sleep only to be woken by Poppy barking. Of course I had to get up to let her out but she was attention seeking . This happened a further time but on the third time, expletives, expletives, I decided to just let her bark. So much for an early restful night.

Of course Poppy was up early this morning and so we went for a walk along the side of the estuary and just caught the end of the sunrise. I let her off on some grassland while I took some photographs only to find that she had disappeared into someone’s garden and was eating the bread they had left out for the birds! I took that as an indication that she was feeling better.

We came back to Priscilla and I had a leisurely breakfast. For the first time in several days, I didn’t need to dress my feet as I wasn’t going to be walking very far today. I attempted a shower but couldn’t get any hot water so resorted to a Bev special, a baby wipe wash!

Later we went to the bookshop that Diana the lovely lady I met yesterday mentioned. It was freezing cold in there so we didn’t stay long. The lady gave me a leaflet on the Wigtown women’s walk which we did. So I learned a little bit of history about the women of Wigtown and the Wigtown martyrs. This is the stake to which they were tied and when the tide came in they drowned. A lovely story!!!! The view across the estuary is the endpoint for my walk tomorrow.

Later Poppy and I went for tea and cake in the Readinglasses bookshop it was lovely and warm and inviting in there. I handed out more hearts.

I took the opportunity to sort out my bed and clothes and several cupboards in Priscilla. I also re-organised my shoes and boots making them much more accessible including the boot dryers and wet weather gear in anticipation of the change in whether conditions for the weeks ahead.

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned before, but I’m sleeping on the top bunk. This sounds exciting but trying to get in is an acrobatic performance requiring great flexibility. This has proved difficult especially while I’ve had sore feet and aching legs. I’m feeling a bit more agile now but hopefully I’ll have a lot more space tonight.

Finally, I indulged in fish and chips from the aptly named Frying Scotsman which were excellent I really enjoyed them. I gave out some hearts and the staff were really touched. I wonder how many times I’m going to eat fish and chips during my journey. Perhaps I should start a poll.

I finished off my evening, by watching some TV, including an episode of Doctor Who. That reminded me of the time that Angela bought me tickets for the Doctor Who exhibition for my birthday and we all went as a family. The boys were only young and loved getting inside the Dalek. We were also amazed how small Kylie Minogue was as her costume was on display, such a small waist, child size.

The temperature has dropped considerably and Poppy and I are wrapped up in blankets and I’ve even put her a furry jacket on to keep her warm tonight. Perhaps I’m going soft in my old age. Wish me luck for an early night and a full nights sleep ready for a long day ahead and the return of Rhoda and Steve.
