Day 307: Ardvreck Castle to Drumrunie

Best bits: watching eagles fly

Worst bits: feeling exhausted

Distance: 16.5 miles

After saying goodbye to Vicky we left Scourie to drive back to Ardvreck Castle to start today’s walk. The sun was out giving glorious views of the landscape.

I left Priscilla without my water bottle again today but Aly came to my rescue and it was like a proper support vehicle moment as she handed me the bottle through the window while I was on the move.

Ardvreck Castle was soon in the distance, a tiny speck in this photo, and was dwarfed by the hills surrounding it.

Sometimes my imagination runs away with me and on this occasion I saw an active volcano.

And these hills reminded me to check my breasts. Appropriate as I’m raising funds for Coppafeel! and Breast Cancer Now. Take this as a reminder too.

Yesterday we watched the movie about climbing Suilven and here it is in all its glory.

Lunch stop at 10 miles was at the Elphin Tearoom. The name reminded us of something out of Lord of the Rings. The place was lovely and we sat outside and chatted to lots of people. Then Aly spotted a couple of eagles flying overhead. Folk with binoculars confirmed that they were in fact golden eagles. Wow how fantastic was that and they gave us a great display.

The final 6 miles was hard work. There was a steady ascent along the road which at times was busy although not anywhere near as busy or as dangerous as the A96 at Inverness! However there have been what seems like hundreds of motorcycles go past me mainly German in origin. There also seems to be a predominance of Porsches on these roads. At least the scenery is beautiful.

The final two miles were really hard work. The heat had taken its toll and I guess I am still recovering from the virus. My legs were heavy and I felt like I was dragging them along. The end of the day is always tough and I’m so glad when I see Priscilla. Today I had to gather my strength to heave myself inside. This is me putting on a brave face and telling myself to get a grip and suck it up at about 2 miles to go!

Ullapool was our final destination in Priscilla and our campsite with a spot by the sea for the next few days. I was too tired to go for a shower but at least I managed a WWW (wet wipe wash). We were treated to a wonderful sunset which also was reflected on Priscilla’s bonnet.
