Day 119: Padstow to Porthcothan

Chris and I drove to Porthcothan this morning and dropped Priscilla off before driving back to Padstow.

After visiting the Spar shop where Emma had kindly left a donation and a bag of goodies for me, we went for breakfast. So those of you who commented about my weight loss and need for extra food will be very happy, and so was I.

I said my final goodbye to Chris and then left the lovely harbour at Padstow.

It wasn’t long before I was climbing back up onto the cliffs. The weather was good again today, albeit a little windy. It made for great views.

I met lots of lovely people today, including Jason and Darren who were revisiting places they have been in the past. They very kindly gave me a donation and also made a very generous one online too. Thank you.

I also met Linda, Simon and Lilly. Lilly is planning on walking for charity from Lands End to John O’Groats later in the year. We had a quick chat about practicalities and logistics.

I stopped at Trevone for a cup of tea and to rest my ankle which was starting to get quite sore. On the way back across the beach, I felt compelled to write Angela‘s name in the sand. I wanted to feel that she was also there with me and I had a little chat to her.

Harlyn Bay was very pretty and I walked across the beach in the hope that I could get up the cliffs at the other side. I enjoyed playing with my shadow. I just made it across the beach before the tide came in and would have cut me off.

I headed across the cliff tops towards the lifeboat station at Trevose, which looks like it’s precariously perched on the cliffs. It looks like the lifeboat would shoot out pretty quickly from there.

My ankle was feeling very sore by this stage when I saw this signpost to Booby’s bay. So I decided to cut a little bit off the headland and go straight to it.

It didn’t disappoint. The view of Booby’s Bay was quite spectacular.

The scenery got better and better. Next was Constantine Bay. This was a glorious beach stretching out a long way.

As I climbed back up onto the cliffs again, I was lucky enough to find a bench to rest on as my ankle was really sore by that point. I had an interesting experience crossing the river that ran down the beach. It was actually very deep and so I got my boots wet.

I limped the remainder of the way, feeling very sorry for myself. I was so glad that today wasn’t too long or arduous.

There were still some spectacular views to be had before I finished.

As we are still in the winter season, the car park is free. However, that means that the facilities are very limited!

Today proved to be one of my most difficult days from a physical perspective. As soon as I got back to Priscilla, I got the ice pack out, followed by ibuprofen gel and medication.

Tomorrow is going to be more arduous and so I need to think carefully about what to do with my ankle.

Best bits: amazing views

Worst bits: sore ankle

Distance: 11.2 miles

  1. Do you use a walking pole to reduce stress on your ankle? If not, why not try one!
I know you’re younger than me but I use one for longer walks.
