I’ve just been watching Sara Cox: Every Step of the Way for Children in Need, and it stirred up a lot of memories.
The documentary doesn’t shy away from how brutal these kinds of challenges really are — the physical exhaustion, the constant aches, and the mental toll that creeps in day after day. Watching it, I found myself nodding along. I know exactly how that feels, because I’ve lived it.

Sara also speaks about the privilege of meeting so many incredible people along the way. That part really resonated with me. One of the greatest gifts of my own journey was the people I met — kind, generous strangers who offered help, encouragement, and support exactly when I needed it most. Those moments stay with you long after the blisters heal.
Sara walked 135 miles in five days and raised over £10 million — roughly £75,000 per mile. My journey was very different. I walked 5,108 miles over 365 days and raised £69,878, which works out at about £13 per mile.

The comparison isn’t about diminishing anyone’s effort — what Sara achieved was extraordinary. But it does highlight the difference in circumstances. Like many celebrities, Sara had the power of media exposure and a professional support team behind her. I was mostly walking solo, relying on friends, family, and the people I met along the way to keep me going.

Different scales, different resources, different journeys — but the same truth remains: every step matters. Whether it’s one mile or five thousand, the real value lies in the purpose behind the walk and the people you meet when you put one foot in front of the other.
