Day 342: Kilninver to Ardfern

Best bits: meeting lovely people, massive plate of food

Worst bits: getting caught with my pants down, tired legs, cold shower

Distance: 15.2 miles

Days to the finish: 23

The weather forecast wasn’t too great for today and so I was glad that it had stopped raining when we woke up. We had breakfast with Eddie and Seonaid before saying goodbye. Then it was off to Tesco’s for fuel and provisions before arriving at the start point.

I had only been going for a few minutes when it started to rain, so on with the waterproofs. Today was to be walking mainly on the road.

About an hour and I need a comfort stop which is always difficult when walking along the road. However, I spotted a main track forest track with a big gate off to the left. It was completely deserted so I ran across and had just started my pee when wouldn’t you know it a big Land Rover with a trailer on the back wanted to turn into the very track where I was. There I was with my pants around my ankles, bare arse on show and the guy in the truck just staring at me. I was in his way. Fortunately, I was able to stop mid flow and move to the side while he drove past. Well sometimes nature calls and you have to go!

The rain came on and off all day and at times obliterated the views. There was evidence of storm Amy all around, from fallen trees, broken branches and damaged electricity cables.

It wasn’t long before I arrived at Kilmelford where Fiona was waiting with a cuppa and lunch.

We spoke about Anglea over lunch. When I set off again I was sad. I was thinking about Angela and how I would give anything for one more cuddle and a chat, like we used to do on a lazy Sunday morning.

I was still walking in the main road all the way to Arduaine. I had to cross and recross the road as it had blind bends and summits and I needed to be able to see the traffic and it to see me. In addition to my pink hi viz vest I also had a flashing light to make myself more visible in the spray from the road.

Another refreshment stop with Fiona which I was ready for. I think the run at the weekend has taken more out of my legs than I realised. There have been many huge logging trucks passing me today and this sign indicates that this road is the main timber haulage route.

There was always a smell of freshly cut pine as the trucks passed me.

Refuelled by tea and cake I was soon off the main road and onto a track. This led me into Carraig Mhor which had some nice looking houses.

One house had this rather odd sculpture outside the door. Not only is the dead bird worrying but the eyes are really menacing!

I got a final look at the harbour before entering woodland on my way to Ardfern.

A couple of people stopped me as they had passed me in cars earlier in the day. Dougie was really lovely and gave me a donation.

Unfortunately by the time I arrived in Ardfern it was raining really heavily and I was absolutely out of energy. So I didn’t take any photos. Let’s hope it’s better weather tomorrow as it’s been raining all afternoon and evening.

I was looking forward to a shower at the campsite but after getting undressed and ready there was only cold water! So a quick wash of all the important parts and I was back in Priscilla. Fiona cooked up a massive plateful of pasta and veggie sausages which I managed to eat every last bit of. Fiona has been passing the time by crocheting a blanket. We were both tired and went to bed early.
