Day 314: Laide to Gairloch

Best bits: absolutely spectacular scenery

Worst bits: boy racers on the roads

Distance: 17 miles

Janet and I drove back to Laide for the start of today’s walk. The drive over was fantastic with panoramic views. I was going to be in for a treat. When we arrived in Laide I popped back into the post office and had a chat with Margaret thanking her again for the ice creams from yesterday.

The weather was a bit cooler today and the forecast was for rain this afternoon so I hoped I would get to at least lunch break before I got wet.

Looking back the views were outstanding. I spotted a little bat in the road. Unfortunately it was dead. Poor thing.

Kath and Keith pulled up in a car at the road side they were friends of a lady who follows me who had told them to look out for me while they were driving the North Coast 500. What are the odds in actually seeing me.

As I climbed higher the views became better and I could see much further into the distance.

Once at the top the views changed again and became more spectacular as the mountains appeared in the distance. This was the way I would be walking for the rest of the day.

I met Janet at this view point where we had a cuppa and a snack before I carried back on. The wind was strong and I was glad to get out of it for a while.

The mountains formed the valley for Loch Maree.

Climbing again I left Loch Maree behind and the size and shape of the mountains became more defined.

The road was busy at times and a convoy of boy racers in Porsches came past at high speed followed by others with noisy exhausts.

We stopped at a the cafe at the National Trust Inverewe Garden in Poolewe for a cuppa and a scone. The staff there were really lovely. Then it was the last push back on the road to Gairloch.

It was Janet’s last evening with me and so we went out to dinner at the local pub. What an interesting experience that was. An American couple asked for a drinks menu but they didn’t have one. Then they asked for a recommendation for a whiskey but the staff couldn’t give any and apparently the boxes of whiskey on the bar didn’t all have bottles in them. Our waitress didn’t know what fish skin was and Janet’s fruit salad was out of a tin!
