Heather and Janette dropped me off at St Abbs this morning. Immediately I got chatting to two ladies from the Berwickshire marine reserve. They were very excited when I asked to take a photograph and went inside to get the rest of the team.
I bumped into a lady. I met briefly yesterday who is from St Andrews area and we kept seeing each other in the distance and she kept passing me while I was talking to other people.
St Abbs was absolutely stunning this morning, the rocky cliffs with stacks were beautiful. The sun was shining and the sea was reasonably calm. It was hot but there was a slight head wind keeping me a bit cooler. The colours looked vibrant in the sunshine.
On the way up to the Lighthouse, I chatted to Peter and Pat originally from Liverpool and now living in Wigan. They are just celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary and we’re very happy that they could still walk up to the Lighthouse.
Elspeth was getting out of her car with a huge pack on her back a large binocular and tripod and a laptop. She was doing survey work for the RSPB.
The scenery here is very spectacular. Every time I go around a headland or reach the top of a hill there was another spectacular view waiting for me.
Bright blue butterflies and neon blue damson flies filled the air. They were all too fast to get photographs.
At times today it was difficult to distinguish between actual paths and paths made by livestock.
It was silent with only the sounds of birds tweeting, the gentle breeze and the waves swirling around the rocks. Then I entered a field of sheep and the noise of sheep munching on grass is surprisingly loud.
As I passed through a farm, I laughed at the sense of humour the farmer must have.
After a long walk on the exposed headlands, I got my first sight of the Torness nuclear power station which would be my destination for today. I also had a birds eye view of the lovely harbour at Cove.
It was a short walk into Coull where Heather and Janette and a group of people from Derby were waiting for me and cheered me in for my refreshment stop.
Janette joined me on the last few miles of my journey today. Fortunately, some of it was in Shady Woodland which helped to keep us cool from the intense heat. The path ranged from woodland to pebble beaches, narrow paths on the cliff and finally a sandy beach. Unfortunately, I must’ve had something in my shoe and developed a blister.
We had to pay special attention to our foot placement as we came off the cliff and onto the beach via some very loose pebbles that were on a steep slope.
After a nice walk on the sandy beach, we passed up through the dunes and onto another path leading to a car park where Heather was waiting for us. It had been a long hot day fortunately it was only a couple of minutes drive back to our lodge. I jumped in the shower to cool off and remove all of the sweat and dust from my body and do a quick check for ticks.
Janette had put the beers in the fridge and so it was nice and refreshing. Janette made spaghetti and meatballs, great carb loading for tomorrow’s long walk!
There has been a lot of social media activity today as attitude magazine had done a video piece about my award. Let’s hope it generates more donations.
After replying to comments, it was time to write not one but two blogs tonight. I was determined to get them finished before I went to sleep.
