Best bits: lovely weather and great hospitality by Fran
Worst bits: saying goodbye to Allen 🙁
Distance: 14 miles
We had to pack up and leave our little oasis of luxury at Silver Sands Holiday Park and said goodbye to the gorgeous Allen.

Logistics were a little complicated today. We drove Priscilla to where we left her for the day. Then we drove down very narrow and windy lanes to Porthallow. Well done to Bridget with her clever driving.
I chatted to two ladies who were resting on the first few steps of the initial ascent of the day. Once up on the tops the views were great.

The weather started off quite cold but soon warmed up and the sun came out making the views spring into life. I was surprised to see such large ships out in the sea and got my first real views of Falmouth.

Sometimes it feels like I am on a road to nowhere, but today there was a gate to nowhere. It seems like a lot of effort went into it.

It started to rain and the semblance of a rainbow appeared on the horizon. I’ve not seen many rainbows for a while and so I stood and really absorbed the view.

The guide book suggested crossing the river at Gillan at low tide using stepping stones but also said to throw sand on them to avoid slipping. I arrived at low tide and went down to check them out. I couldn’t even see them, I think they were buried in silt. So it was back to walking around the first estuary of the day! Another mile to the journey. I met some locals and they said they wouldn’t recommend the stepping stones as they were so slippery.

I stood for a while looking at this tree wondering how old it is. It seems to have had a few adventures along the way.

I met up with Bridget and we walked the rest of the way to Helford via an obstacle course.

We met a lady picking wild garlic, the first pick of the season. There wasn’t anything open in Helford apart from the toilets so we went back in the car to collect Priscilla where we sat and had lunch.

We drove to Maenporth and arrived to a sign saying motorhomes absolutely forbidden in the car park!! Aghh. Then we spotted a cafe with a car park and popped inside for a cuppa and they let us park there while we walked into Falmouth. Bridget was reminiscing about all the places she had visited in her childhood.

We looked back at where we had come from. Then walked into Falmouth where we passed the docks full of naval ships in various stages of construction. I wanted an ice cream but what do you know, everywhere was closed. So in desperation we went to Costa Coffee to await Fran, Bridget’s cousin. She was taking us back to collect Priscilla and the car and then she was our host for the evening.
After some interesting driving and negotiating tight corners we arrived at Fran’s. We had a lovely evening with Fran and Robbie with gorgeous food and of course GnT and wine. We finished the evening with Bridget interviewing me.
