Day 105: Cannington to Kilve – 3 million steps

When I got out of bed this morning I had a stiff ankle and heel and so I hobbled to Asda to use the loo. It did loosen up as I walked.

Fiona was back in the driving seat today so to avoid more busy road walking she dropped me off at Cannington as my start point.

Unfortunately the road was extremely busy with buses, farm vehicles, lorries and cars travelling at crazy speeds. I had to jump in and out of the road and progress was slow. This was 3 miles of relentless traffic. I was pleased when I got the opportunity to turn off onto a B Road. Then I was faced with different issues, fords, fortunately there were wee bridges to cross them.

It seemed to take an age to get back in the coast path and when I did it was to walk around the perimeter of Hinckley Point power station. Well two being decommissioned and the construction of a new nuclear power station.

At this point I started to develop a migraine. That familiar feeling of sunken eyes and slightly altered vision, head ache and sickly feeling. I had also started to feel pain in my heel. Then I felt a really sharp pain of a twang under my heel. Not a good feeling! I limped

My way to my lunch break and was so pleased to see Priscilla parked up. I sat on the step and took off my boots. I wasn’t sure at this point if I could carry on.

Fiona had much ready for me and I took some medication for my migraine and m sore heel. I decided to try another 3 miles. So I changed my boots and set off.

The terrain was varied, from grassland to muddy path to large stones. Not great in a sore foot. I had to use my pole to help spread the load.

I limped slowly and painfully into Kilve and decided that was it for the day. Another 6 miles was out of the question.

We drove into Watchet where we parked up and then found the delightful Chives cafe where we met Nigel and Samantha and Matt.

I had a scrumptious warm scone and Whortleberry jam which has a deeper, richer flavour to the cultivated Blueberry and is found growing wild on Exmoor & Dartmoor.

Fiona and I went on a short walk and saw the Ancient Marina with the albatross he shot. It reminded me of when Angela was obsessed with Albatrosses when we went to New Zealand.

We also saw this beautiful 70 year old Liverpool class lifeboat The Elliott Gill.

I set Cinders, oops Fiona, to work on doing the dinner dishes before we relaxed for the evening.

Meanwhile in Wigan….Bev had gone to work and left Denys to visit the vet with Doris who had a bad case of the s**ts having gorged on the contents of the compost heap. Once back and in the garden Poppy chose her moment to escape through a small hole in the hedge and into the duck pond of a nearby property! Denys was panic stricken and had to hobble, as he is recovering from having a new knee, as quickly as he could round the street to try and get to her. While he was doing this she decided to go back through the hedge and back home! Poppy is now back on a lead!

Poor Denys now has to try and fix the hole! Oops.

Best bits: cream scone and discovering Whortleberry jam

Worst bits: having to stop prematurely today!

Distance: 12.7 miles
