Day 83: Freshwater East to Amroth

It was a chilly misty morning when Cathy dropped me off at Freshwater East. The sun was just rising and I managed to get a few nice photographs as the path took me through the sand dunes and up onto the cliffs.

This will be my last day on the 180 mile long Pembrokeshire coastal path which I started in Cardigan.

Shortly after I had started I met Anne and Gilly who were walking the path one day a week at a time.

I met quite a few people today and stopping to chat obviously slows down my pace a little so I have to make up the pace in between. But it’s really nice to have the opportunity to talk to people and share the hearts.

I chatted with a nice young couple called Ollie and Charis with their dog Peggy at beach. I also met a couple from Barnsley who were on holiday.

I passed several lovely beaches and had a few assents and descents crossing from one side to the other.

I walked around another MOD facility Air Defence Range (ADR) Manorbier and could see a huge dart like item with a parachute that looked like it was stranded on the cliff face. Not quite sure what that’s about. There was a large drone flying above the base as well.

Later a lady called Carol pulled up in her car and wound her window down asking if I was Tracey as she had seen a photo of me on facebook. She gave me a donation and wished me well she was one of the bluetits too.

I detoured off the path slightly walking past the Manobier youth hostel which looked closed for the winter. I stopped and had a break on the picnic benches outside it. This area is a dark sky discovery area. As I was just leaving the bench, the door opened and Snowy and Alice came outside and Alphonzo started running after me.

Blimey I had to walk round to another MOD range on the headland near Tenby but this one seemed to no longer be operational. I came down the cliffs onto the beach at Tenby which was very pleasant to be walking along a sandy beach again. However, the experience was blighted somewhat by large plumes of smoke as someone was burning damp wood.

At Tenby I popped into a cafe for a cuppa and jacket potato and a rest! With a much needed energy boost and taking the weight off I was back on my way. The sun was shining like a beautiful spring day there was even some warmth in it and it made the beach look glorious in the sunlight.

Eventually, I came to Saundersfoot which is a beautiful little village and beach. It’s there that the path takes you through a tunnel. Unfortunately, the second tunnel was closed due to a landslip and so I had to climb up over the high route.

It had been a long day and I still had about 4 miles to walk. The sun was starting its descent as I passed through Wisemans Bridge.

Then it was uphill once more over the high route across the cliff tops and finally down into a Amroth where Cathy and Ian were waiting for me. Cathy walked with me on the final section to the signpost that marked the end of the Pembrokeshire coastal path.

Then as we got into the car the sun began to drop low in the sky lighting up the beach. I’ve been walking sunrise to sunset.

So what’s been happening with Priscilla? I received a phone call from Swift who were asking what they could do to help the situation. However, I also received a message from Mary, who I will be staying with tomorrow, who had contacted the largest caravan motorhome dealer in Wales. She had spoken to Phil the boss who agreed that I can take Priscilla there tomorrow in Carmarthen and they will take a look at her waterworks! Yippee.

All that was left to do was a debrief with Cathy and Ian. They are so kind and they gave me a bottle of champagne that I can share with whoever I am with when I complete 2000 miles. They also gave me a little puffin, which we are going to call Philomena or Phil, who will join me on my journey.

Best bits: meeting lots of people today, enjoying the sunshine

Worst bits: saying goodbye to Cathy and Ian.

Distance: 19.9 miles
