Day 24: Beckfoot to Maryport

A bit of a blustery night in Priscilla as storm Bert raged on. Then a slow start as I was on my own and had to make my own breakfast! The shock of it! Then sort my feet and drive back to yesterday’s finish point.

It felt good to be back walking on the actual coast after what seems like an age of road walking. However, it wasn’t long before the path literally disappeared beneath my feet and a diversion was in place.

Storm Bert was still in full force so I decided that I would keep to the path for a little shelter rather than walk on the beach and feel the full force of the wind. Also my boots from yesterday were still soaked and I was in a fresh dry pair today so didn’t want to push my luck.

This farmer is very good as these remains of sunflowers surrounded the field. They were spent and bowed their heads towards the sun. They must have looked stunning when they were in full bloom. I love sunflowers and wish I could have such a display.

The sky cleared a little and the hills of Dumfries and Galloway came into view. It’s hard to believe that this was where I had walked around last week!

Eventually Poppy and I got to Maryport where I went in search of my lost welly which fell out of Priscilla yesterday with other items including a bottle of wine when Aly got out of the passenger door. I didn’t find it 😔.

We met Aly at the harbour for lunch. She kindly left me a gift for my birthday tomorrow then gave us a lift back to Priscilla and Poppy was so tired she slept in the footwell.

Aly had literally just left and I was about 30 seconds into a call with Jackie and Alex when a car pulled up right in front of Priscilla. I thought what on earth are they doing and then I did a second take. It was Bev and Denys!! I was gobsmacked. They came to surprise me for my birthday and showered me with lovely gifts.

They had booked a room in a hotel which had a bath. Needless to say I didn’t take any persuasion to go with them and make full use of the facilities. A bath, a meal, two large glasses of wine and several stories later it was time to go back to Priscilla for the night. I had just got in when there was a heavy knock on the door. Who should be there but Daniel with a bunch of flowers and a tray of home baked flapjack. It turns out that all of them were in on it. So back to the bar and the grumpy staff who begrudgingly let us buy one more round of drinks at 9:20 pm! And a make your own cuppa.

I feel very loved indeed. What a brilliant early birthday. Danny stayed the night with me and Poppy in Priscilla as we were shaken to sleep by storm Bert.

Best bits: so many lovely surprises and hugs today ♥️

Worst bits: none really

Distance: 9.5 miles
