Day 259: Leuchars to Dundee

Best bits: crossing the Tay bridge with Danny

Worst bits: wasps

Distance: 15.7 miles

We had a lazy start this morning as the intention was for a relatively short day. We drove to Dundee and then had to run to catch the train. We didn’t have time to get a ticket and so told the ticket guy on the barrier we would buy one on the train and he kindly let us through. We jumped on the train just in time before it departed. The first stop was Leuchars where we jumped off.

There was a café on the station and Danny decided we should get a coffee. That turned into a role and sausage and an empire biscuit. Eventually, we set off.

Initially, we had to walk around the military base at Leuchars that had signs around it saying no photographs. The temperature rose and thankfully the route took us through extensive woodlands in the Tentsmuir nature reserve pretty much for the rest of the day. Unfortunately, that meant all we saw were lots of trees.

After about 6 miles, we came across this fabulous little spot. It was close to the beach and had lots of car parking and deck chairs. somehow Danny was under the illusion that we were only walking 10 miles today. When he realised that we had further to walk he kept coming back to the fact that he had been hoodwinked.

It’s also have this fabulous Little crêpe bar Salt and pine. Kirsty offered us free crêpes and although they looked absolutely gorgeous we politely declined.

It was scorching hot by this point and we set off again into the woodland. A couple of miles later we stopped for a sandwich buy some benches. Unfortunately, the Wasps thought it was their territory and surrounded us. Danny did a great impression of Steve with flies. Wafting his shirt and flailing his arms around and generally jumping about.

Eventually, we came out of the forest and could finally see the Tay estuary and Dundee in the distance.

Our next stop was Tayport where there was a lovely little Harbour and we managed to find a nice pub for a drink and sit down.

The final section of the day was walking along the Tay road bridge which I had been looking forward to.

Interestingly, on this bridge, the pedestrian and cycle lanes were in the central reservation. It meant that photographs weren’t particularly aesthetic however I did manage to get this one of the Railway Bridge.

It took a long time to get over the bridge as it’s around 2,250 metres, and is one of the longest road bridges in Europe, and was opened in 1966.

As we reached the other side, there was a man on a bike with lots of luggage fastened to it. I asked him where he was going and he said he was cycling around Britain. On further questioning it turned out it was only his second day. When I said I was heading in the same direction I’m not sure he really believed how far I had walked.

At the end of the bridge is the new V&A. This was Danny‘s idea of a good pose in front of the sign. Actually, I think he was hoping that I would fall in.

We took a look at the discovery which is in a dry dock next to the V&A before heading back to the car park.

I’m back at Priscilla. I had a shower then popped to Asda for food for dinner and proceeded to cook. Meanwhile, Danny went to David Lloyd for a shower and a sauna. We watched the women’s Euros quarter-final between England and Sweden that finished with success for England on penalties.

So it’s the end of week 37 and here is an update on progress so far.
